Couldn’t we just swap links?

As any SEO professional will tell you, bulk link exchanging is pretty much dead as a marketing strategy. Google now detects and often penalizes reciprocal linking. They have correctly judged that most symmetrical links represent a low-quality connection for readers, something more likely to be about marketing than content.

I do not “swap links” and neither should you. If you really want to tell your readers about my content, and I feel the same way about telling my readers about your content … then we can talk. But usually it just doesn’t flow both ways in a respectable way.
